Ingredient Safety Information
Optical brighteners
Optical brighteners are used in laundry detergents to improve whiteness of fabrics. They absorb UV light and re-emit back in the blue part of the visible spectrum, enhancing overall fabric whiteness/brightness appearance. They are usually used at low levels.
The toxicity of optical brighteners to Algae, Daphnia, and Fish ranges from 7 mg/L to 1000 mg/L (LC50). Their potential to bioaccumulate is very low.
Optical brighteners are photodegradable. The photodegradation products are readily biodegradable. Elimination of optical brighteners during wastewater treatment is reported to be > 95%. (via sorption on sludge).
