Perfumes
The independent Research Institute of Fragrance Materials (RIFM) manages the environmental safety of the fragrance materials used by the Procter & Gamble Company. Based on RIFM recommendations and on volume surveys, IFRA, International Fragrance Association (www.ifraorg.org), issues guidelines to its fragrance manufacturers members, including P&G. Compliance with RIFM guidelines is mandatory.
Perfumes used in detergents are a complex mixture of more than a dozen of ingredients and some of these ingredients are mixtures themselves.
Fragrance materials (FMs) are generally semivolatile organic compounds.
Because of the diversity of the physical and chemical characteristics of fragrance materials, their ecotoxicity is highly variable, LC50 values ranging from 0.1 to >10 mg/L
Biodegradation rates of fragrance materials vary also according to the chemical structure from readily biodegradable to not biodegradable. Removal rates in wastewater treatment plants ranged from 91 to 99.9%, depending on physical and chemical properties and biodegradability of the fragrance materials.
