Ingredient Safety Information
Silicates
Silicates (SiO2/Na2O) are used in detergents for various reasons, including washing machine protection and alkalinity/buffering. Some silicates can also be used as ion exchange builders, exchanging sodium ions for hardness ions
Direct toxicity of silica to aquatic organisms is very low. Diatoms are the only group of aquatic organisms that have a major nutrient requirement for silica. Increases in dissolved silicate concentration would affect the ecological stoichiometry (decrease N:Si and P:Si), which could influence phytoplankton species composition and favour the growth of diatoms over other groups of algae.
Biodegradation is not applicable because silica is an inorganic compound.
