Soil Release Polymers (SRP)
Several amine polymers are used to lift soil from fabric and keep it in suspension in the wash water. They are high molecular chemicals (1500 to 60 000 g/mole) and very water-soluble.
These polymers are not harmful to aquatic organisms. Studies of acute toxicity to Daphnia magna and fish species have been conducted. No toxicity was detected at the highest concentrations tested of 1000 mg/L. Similarly, no acute or chronic toxicity was detected in green algae at the highest concentrations tested, 1000 mg/L.
The polymers are not readily biodegradable but are fairly well removed in wastewater treatment. In a continuous-flow activated sludge (CAS) simulation system, removal was approximately 70% and attributed to polymer sorption to wastewater solids.
