Ingredient Safety Information

Zinc phthalocyanine Sulfonate (ZPS)
Zinc Phthalocyanine Sulfonate (ZPS) is used in granular laundry detergents at very low levels (<0.05%). In areas of the world where line drying is common, ZPS is used as an effective photo-activated bleach.

Photodegradation is the quickest degradation process (98% in 24 hours). All photolysis products are then biodegraded (~ 84% ThCO2 in 28 days). There are no persistent metabolites formed during the biodegradation of the photolysis products.

In absence of light (to avoid photodegradation), acute toxicity (LC50) data for fish (Bluegill) were higher than 100 mg/l. Test results with an invertebrate species (Daphnia magna) indicated that ZPS and photodegraded ZPS have a similar low level of toxicity (LC50 values > 100 mg/l). This indicates that ZPS is not harmful to aquatic organisms.
