A.I.S.E.' s Code of good Environmental Practice
The Code of Good Environmental Practise
The objectives of the AISE Code are for companies to continue environmental progress when formulating products and packaging for household laundry detergents and to encourage consumers to be more closely involved by proper use of the product
The Code is a voluntary initiative across the 15 countries of the EU, plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. It spans over the bulk of the territory covered by the National Associations which are members of AISE. The Code is open to all Companies both members and non-members of our Associations. AISE wants to have an Industry wide initiative that will have a real impact on environmental quality and on how we are perceived by the outside world.

How did industry enforce it?
Fundamentally, this is a voluntary agreement by which a Company that adheres to the Code, commits itself to taking into account environmental considerations in the design of their laundry detergent products and packages. This is something that most of our Companies are already doing, but we want to make sure that there is a further effort in that direction.
Furthermore, we want to engage the consumer in a partnership with us on the Code with the ultimate goal of improving the environmental impact of the wash process. This is because the consumer, through the selection of the wash cycle, of the wash temperature, of the dosage, of the fill level, and of the type of package she/he buys, has a major impact on the environmental load of the wash process.
From our side, we want to provide information on the washing process to help consumers get the best results while minimising environmental burden.
This is the "Wash right" process, where we are foreseeing an important educational program that will be deployed in all countries through our marketing organisations and with full knowledge of the local consumer organisations. Subscribers to the Code commit to achieve four quantitative targets over a 5 year period starting from January 1997, and using the 1996 calendar year as a reference for the calculation. So these targets should be achieved by end 2001.
The AISE Code of Good Environmental Practice is a voluntary initiative agreed upon by laundry detergent manufacturers across Europe. One part of the Code is the Wash Right Campaign. This is designed to encourage consumers to help us reduce the impact on the environment and gives some basic guidelines that we all can follow.

But in practices, What does this mean?
- a 10% reduction per capita product tonnage consumption
- a 10% reduction per capita packaging material tonnage consumption
- a 10% reduction per capita tonnage consumption of organic materials which are poorly biodegradable
- a 5% reduction in the energy consumed in the wash process as measured by decreased average washing temperature.
On this latter target we need the cooperation of consumers, as they have the ultimate choice of what to do in their homes, hence the importance of an educational program. From our side, we can play a very important role too, via better formulation technologies that allow effective washing at lower temperatures.
