Cleaning in the Past
People have used water for cleaning purposes since prehistoric times. The use of soap in addition to water was first reported in 2800 B.C. The history of synthetic detergents
is much more recent, going back only to the beginning of the 20th century.
Cleaning Today
There are many different types of consumers. Today's consumers in general are more educated than, say, consumers of two generations ago. Modern consumers are more vocal about what they like and dislike. Some have strong product feature preferences, whereas others are simply looking for good value.
Soap and detergent manufacturers tend to be very responsive to their consumers. The result is the large variety of laundry and cleaning products found in most stores today.
In addition to the "flagship" of a certain brand, the consumer may be presented with several other choices. To name just a few in cleaners: unscented, compact, antibacterial and industrial strength are some of the choices found on store shelves today.
