IPPC Council Directive (96/61/EC) concerning integrated pollution prevention and control

The objective of the Directive is to reduce pollution coming from large industrial installation sources in the EU.

Pollution coming from industrial production processes (for example greenhouse gases, acidifying substances, volatile organic compounds and waste) is still quite considerable in Europe and the Directive aims to reduce this. The Directive also aims to avoid so-called environmental dumping, where companies move from one part of the European Union to another because the environmental requirements are less strict there.
